Our Mission
Historic Preservation
with Economic Viability (Keep it rural!)
History
The Main Street movement began as a national program to
protect the economic future of downtown areas and rural communities.
Na`alehu Main Street (NMS) was formed in 1991, incorporated
March 23, 1992 and awarded 501c3 non-profit status in Spring
1995. It was awarded a CBED contract for strategic planning
in 1993 and formed the Ka`u Learning Center, later spun off.
A door-to-door opinion survey in Na`alehu was carried out
in 1994-95. The Vegenet process for Internet marketing of
farm produce was funded by CBED in 1997 and spun off. NMS
provided technical help in various ways to Na`alehu School.
Murals were painted by local artists throughout Ka`u, with
a grant from the Hawaii Community Foundation.
Our Farmers' Market
has been in continuous operation since December 2001 and
is operating Wednesdays from 8 to 4 and Saturdays 8 am
to 12 noon in front of Ace Hardware, with typically 8 to
12 vendors.
We offered classes
in grant writing and were
pleased to see these benefit particularly some projects
in Ocean View.
We
tutor in Math and English. We also encourage parents with
children to learn English as a second language, and we
have programs especially
for them.
